Biography of SPOT
Events so far…..
Formed in 1996, Spot is the tongue-in-cheek, action-packed voice of the average sarcastic Englishman, and is also the work of North Norfolk’s ingenious youth of today. An area of many misgivings, not least the entertaining thought that all Norfolk folk are farmers or inter-bred as a rule of thumb. Rest assured, there is life in this beautiful backwater, and Spot are as lively and individual as they come.
Originally born as a three-piece, Leigh Bunting (Bub), Andrew Phillips (Phipps) and Mike Waters (Big Mike) set the rock machine in motion for the first 3 years by entertaining the local crowds with their thoroughbred brand of “pop-metal”. Driven by the help of Errol ……? (owner of Plug Studios and “Insaniac” frontman) and performing at many of the areas haunts (most notably the infamous Oval Rockhouse), Spot found themselves quickly being booked by local agents to support touring bands of the likes of Feeder, Skin and Backyard Babies at some of Norwich’s larger venues.
As the clocks turned, Spot’s sound, ever developing, was transformed by the addition of Gavin Thomas on guitar. The bands first album, named fittingly at the time: The Great BSE (British Spot Experiment) was hot off the production line and, although not on general release, was soon snapped up by the increasingly loyal following that Spot had amassed in the Norwich music scene.
Towards the summer of ’99 Spot recruited Chris Brown on bass guitar following the departure of Phipps. At this time the band merged into a rock and roll colossus, with a rock and roll sound so loud and enough booze to fill the local pool that a Spot live show left its mark on anyone that visited. Spot also formed an alliance with to be band manager Rod, following a supporting gig with “Company of Snakes” – a Whitesnake meets Rainbow collaboration at Norwich’s “Waterfront” venue. Spot really started to move forward when Rod struck a deal with independent label “Spiky Black Cat Records”, and the band quickly found themselves recording new album “Lager than Life” at Purple Studios.
During this time Spot continued with their inspiring live showcases and were a regular feature of local promoter Ruben Gotto’s EMPOWER nights at the Fat Pauly’s venue. Playing as often as possible, Spot, on more than one occasion attracted coachloads of fans to the capital, for headline shows at London’s “Sound Republic” in Leicester Square. Meanwhile on the business front, tensions had been mounting as it became clear the record label was having difficulties with the production of a CD. Spot continued with what they do best, playing shows with no funny business.
Now well into 2002, and with new drummer Jamie Saunders, the album “Lager than Life” had been given a complete makeover and had taken on the curious title of “Aggressive Leisurewear”, featuring an S&M style spoof cover, and complete with glamorous model. Despite the loss of the incredible 34 stone presence of Big Mike, departed to pursuer International Wrestling duties, Spot continued to ride the rock and roll dream into the New Year.
The year of 2003 struck a fatal blow to the band as difficult communication with the label and the failure to publish the new album finally took its toll. Against all wishes, Spot disbanded in the summer of ’03.
During the months to follow, and amid some insecurity at the gloomy “no rock” situation, Bub and co formed side project “Rad Day 7”. The band, still incorporating Chris and Olly were fairly consistent with the sound that Spot had produced and managed to write and record some of the best material produced so far. Within a year it became clear there was only one way forward for the pitiful rock credential of this land, and that was Spot. In November 2004 Big Mike returned the band to regain his position of drummer (like we were gonna argue!?), and with Olly on bass, Chris and Bub on guitar, Spot were reborn. Lager rules.
